Abstract (EN)

The oldest and most basic mode of transportation in cities is walking. Transportation, which started on foot, has been replaced by the use of motor vehicles with the development of industry and technology over time. Since motor vehicles provide ease of use in many ways, their use in cities has increased over time. With the increase in the number of vehicles, traffic problems began to occur and vehicles became invaded everywhere. This situation has reduced the preference for walking, which is the oldest movement of cities. The use of motor vehicles for transportation has caused pedestrians to not be able to find a place for themselves in cities. Solutions to the problems faced by pedestrians in access were sought with pedestrianization applications. With pedestrianization, it becomes easier to access cities on foot. This situation enables the shaping of urban spaces and urban identity. Providing access on foot in cities reveals the importance of pedestrianization practices in the developing city, as it affects the discovery and memorability of the city. This thesis study aims to propose urban solutions to combine important focal / sign elements in and around Atatürk City Square in Efeler district of Aydın province in a pedestrian priority system. Thesis study; It is based on the literature review on the subject, field observations and quantitative / qualitative measurements. As a result of the study, it was determined that the roads that will contribute to the formation of a pedestrian priority city center by connecting the focal / sign elements, which have an important place in the identity of the city; and to reveal their strong connections with the square.
