Özet (EN)

Modern Azerbaijani literature began to take form in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, influenced by the evolving socio-political and economic context of the region. Initially shaped under Persian cultural dominance, Azerbaijani intellectual life shifted as Russian political control increased, resulting in the emergence of a new class of Russian-speaking intellectuals. This transformation led to a rise in literary production and critical thought. The 1905 Russian Revolution further accelerated these developments, as the atmosphere of relative freedom allowed for a surge in newspaper and journal publications. With the spread of printing technologies, previously unpublished and lithographically printed works became more accessible. This facilitated a departure from the traditional tezkire (biographical) literary approach and paved the way for modern literary historiography in Azerbaijan. Salman Mumtaz, born in Baku in 1884, stands out as a pioneering figure in this transitional period. Driven by a passion for literature, he collected and studied manuscript copies and began publishing in the satirical journal Molla Nasreddin. From 1920 onward, he continued his scholarly efforts through articles in the newspaper Kommunist. Mumtaz's influential works—Mozalanbey's Travelogue, Sources of Azerbaijani Literature, and El Sairleri—contributed significantly to the foundation of Azerbaijani literary scholarship by introducing forgotten poets and uncovering rare manuscript versions of important works. Tragically, he was executed during Stalin's purges in 1941, yet his legacy remains foundational to Azerbaijani literary historiography.
