Abstract (EN)

Al-Jāmiʿ al-Ṣaghir, compiled by al-Suyuṭi in alphabetical order, rapidly gained prominence in the Islamic world and soon became the subject of numerous scholarly endeavors. Among these, al-Sirāj al-Munir bi-Sharḥ al-Jamiʿ al-Ṣaghir by al-ʿAzizi holds particular significance. Al-ʿAzizi, originally from the village of Bulaq in Egypt, later settled in al-ʿAziziyya, where he pursued advanced studies and authored this commentary. This study focuses on identifying the exegetical methodology adopted by al-Azizi in al-Siraj al-Munir. Its primary aim is to analyze his interpretations systematically in order to outline the principles that characterize his approach to commentary. The importance of this research lies in its originality. To date, no academic study in Turkey has examined al-Azizi or his works. Consequently, this thesis constitutes the first scholarly contribution on the subject. Likewise, no previous study has attempted to determine the exegetical method employed in any commentary on al-Jāmiʿ al-Ṣaghīr in the Turkish academic context, rendering this work pioneering in both respects. Methodologically, the study employs descriptive and analytical approaches. Within this framework, it investigates how al-ʿAzizi implemented the features of comprehensive commentaries, the extent to which he made use of his primary sources, and the ways in which he was influenced by them. The findings demonstrate that al-Azizi relied primarily on three sources: al-Kawkab al-Munīr by al-ʿAlqamī (a student of al-Suyuṭi), al-Taysir by al-Munawi, and Fatḥ Mawlā al-Naṣīr by al-Ḥijazi al-Waʿiẓ. Al-Siraj al-Munir reflects the essential features of comprehensive commentaries, including the use of Qurʾānic verses, prophetic traditions, and Arabic poetry for corroboration; lexical and semantic analysis; juristic and theological discussions; reconciliation of conflicting narrations; explanation of rare expressions; and citation of the occasions of prophetic sayings. In doing so, the work significantly mirrors the characteristic features of the early commentaries on al-Jamiʿ al-Ṣaghir.
