Investigation of stigmatization and depression levels in parents of individuals diagnosed with addiction

This study was conducted to examine the stigmatization and depression levels of parents of individuals diagnosed with addiction. The data were collected from there latives of the patients admitted to the Alcohol and Substance Abuse Treatment Center (AMATEM) of Gazi Yaşargil Training and Research Hospital, Dicle University psychiatry outpatient clinic and hospitalized in the psychiatry service. The study was conducted between September 2023 and May 2024. Research data were collected between February 2024 and April 2024. 60 people participated in the study. Foreach dependent patient, 1 parent was included in the study. 'Participant Information Form', 'Beck Depression Inventory (BDI)' and Parents' Mental Illness Internalized Stigma Scale (ERHIDÖ)' were used to collect the data. 40% of the parents had moderate depression and 40% had mild depression. It was determined that income status, self-harm or self-injury variables had a significant effect on Beck Depression Inventory and internalised stigma scale of mental illness of parents scores, while other demographic variables had a limited effect on these scores. It was found that the level of depressive symptoms increased in those without social security.The level of stigmatisation perceived by parents and the level of depressive symptoms they experience are in a direct proportional relationship. Economic conditions affect mental health. Economic conditions should be taken into consideration when planning mental health services.
