Comparison of video head impulse test responses evaluating the vestibular system in ballet artists with non-dancing healthy adults

Abstract (EN)
Introduction: The vestibular system, responsible for balance and proprioception, is a complex neural network where various functions converge. It encompasses the coordination of eye movements and postural alignment influenced by head movements, orientation, and acceleration. The systems that regulate balance operate in coordination with both peripheral and central vestibular systems. This study aims to evaluate the responses to the video Head Impulse Test (vHIT) among professional ballet dancers, for whom balance is critical, and to assess the vestibular plasticity and therapeutic effects in rehabilitation programs. Method: This study was conducted at the Ear, Nose, and Throat Department of Akdeniz University. Participants with no hearing loss or infectious conditions were included. The study comprised two groups: professional ballet dancers and a control group. Demographic data, audiological and vestibular examinations, vHIT, and SHIMP tests were conducted, with comparisons made between the obtained values. Results: The study included 25 healthy control group members and 25 professional ballet dancers. Among the ballet dancers, 24% were male, with a mean age of 30.12±5.77 years, which was significantly higher than that of the control group. The average professional experience of the ballet dancers was 9.28±5.74 years. No significant difference was observed between healthy individuals and ballet dancers in vHIT tests for both the right and left sides. The SHIMP test also showed no significant difference for either side between the groups. Conclusion: In addition to these tests in the evaluation of vestibular system in ballet dancers, studies related to VEMP test and computerized dynamic posturography should be conducted, and proprioceptive and visual systems should be evaluated together. Future studies are needed to investigate its potential use as an effective therapy method in vestibular rehabilitation. Keywords: VHIT, Ballet, SHIMP.
