ABSTRACTThe objective of this paper is to suggest ways to improve or keep the economicalefficiency of ships for the owners and the managers of fishing vessels of up to 30 mlength. However some of the principles suggested are even for high speed and slowdisplacement hulls. There are also some aspects of the energy effiency for the engineinstallation and hull design which would take attention of the shipbuilders and thecrew onboard. Moreover there is information for the people and workers occupied inthe fishing industry, in which cases they can save fuel and energy.Increasing efficiency can be studied in two aspects: management and technicalcriteria. First of this two is concerned about increasing efficiency without having amodification on the ship hull or the equipment. The methods discussed are more ofthe operating techniques instead of technological improvements. The second aspectis concerned more with the ways to be followed for a new building of a hull,repairing of an existing hull or exchanging of equipments in a ship.In this study, ways for enhancing the efficiency and the probable earnings of thoseways are taken into account. The significance of those earnings are determined withhow energy is used in fishing vessels and in fishing operations instead of calculatingenergy costs only.This paper can be taken as a part of a decision-making process and fishing vesselowners and managers should make an effort to apply most of these suggestions.Furthermore, in this paper the pre-construction and post-construction states of afinished fishing vessel is examined and the before construction and during servicestates are discussed concerning with improving the efficiency.Keywords: Fishing vessel design, propulsive efficiency, fishing industry, energyeconomyix
