Effect of postoperative inspiratory muscle training and strength exercise training on functional capacity, respiratory functions, respiratory muscle strength and endurance in bariatric surgery patients

In this study, it was aimed to examine the effects of exercise, which plays a major role in the treatment of obesity, on parameters such as respiratory functions, respiratory muscle strength, respiratory muscle endurance, muscle strength, peripheral muscle strength, 8 major muscle groups, functional capacity and quality of life. 30 patients included in the study; It was randomized into 3 groups: Group 1, Group 2 and Group 3 (control group), and each group included 10 patients. Resistant exercises for 8 major muscle groups were given to patients in group 1 for 8 weeks. The appropriate weight for each patient was determined using the 'De LormeWatkins' method. Resistant exercises were carried out by our physiotherapist for 1 hour in our 3 session units every week. Patients were asked to walk for a total of 150 minutes per week on days when they did not come to the session. In group 2 patients, in addition to resilient exercises, inspiratory muscle training with Threshold IMT® (PhilipsRespironics, UK) for 8 weeks, 3 days a week under the supervision of a physiotherapist, and 20 minutes a day for a total of 5 days with home exercise 2 days a week. Initial training intensity was set at 30% of the MIP value measured at the patient's initial assessment. Every week, when the patient came to our unit to perform supervised resistant exercises, the MIP value was measured again and the training intensity was set at 30% of the measured MIP value. Patients were asked to walk for a total of 150 minutes per week on days when they did not come to the session. Patients in Group 3 (Control) walked for a total of 150 minutes per week for 8 weeks. As a result; We observed that resistant exercise and IMT + resistant exercises applied after bariatric surgery had positive effects on respiratory parameters, dynamic and static muscle strength, functional capacity and quality of life. In line with the findings of our study, IMT + resistant exercises and then resistant exercises are highly effective methods, since they have more effective results in terms of physiotherapy and rehabilitation of patients after bariatric surgery. xvi Key words: bariatric surgery, resistant exercises, inspiratory muscle training, respiratory function test, respiratory muscle strength, respiratory muscle endurance, peripheral muscle strength.
