Determination of dischargereadiness levels and affecting factors in patients undergoing bariatric surgery

Objective: In this study, it was aimed to determine the level of readiness for discharge and the factors affecting patients who underwent bariatric surgery. Method: The study is descriptive and cross-sectional. Research ethics committee approval, institutional approval and necessary consents of patients were obtained in this study. The study was conducted with 142 patients who had bariatric surgery and met inclusion criteria for sample. Data were collected using Patient Information Form and Short Form of the Readiness for Hospital Discharge Scale- Patient Self-Assessment Form. Results: In the study, the level of readiness for discharge who had bariatric surgery was found to be "overready" with an average score of 8.27 ± 1.39. The highest sub-dimension score was found in the expected sub-dimension (9.22 ± 1.39), and the lowest sub-dimension score was found in the "information" sub-dimension (7.19 ± 2.76). It was determined that the number of days spent in the hospital before surgery, the number of days spent in the hospital after surgery, the total number of days spent in the hospital, factors of applied surgical procedure affected the readiness for discharge. In the sub-dimensions of the scale; the effects of gender, target weight, the number of days spent in the hospital before surgery, the number of days spent in the hospital after surgery, factors of applied surgical procedure were found to be statistically significant (p<0.05). Conclusion: It was seen that bariatric surgery patients were ''overready'' for discharge. The number of days spent in the hospital before surgery, the number of days spent in the hospital after surgery, the total number of days spent in the hospital, the applied surgical procedure, gender and target weight emerged as factors influencing the readiness for discharge in patients who underwent bariatric surgery.
