Investigation of recovery properties from general anesthesia in morbid obese patients undergoing bariatric surgery

The recovery time after anesthesia is determined by the general condition of the patient. Obesity is a life-threatening disease due to comorbidities. In this observational study, we aimed to investigate the characteristics of recovery from general anesthesia in morbidly obese patients who undergoing bariatric surgery. 100 female (Group F) and 100 male (Group E) patients who has undergone bariatric surgery under general anesthesia were randomly enrolled in the study. General anaesthesia was induced with propofol, remifentanil and rocuronium, and maintained with sevoflurane or desflurane, remifentanil and rocuronium. At the end of surgery, anesthesia was discontinued and the residual effects of rocuronium was reversed with sugammadex. Having been admitted into the recovery unit after awaking and extubation, the patients were transferred to the ward according to F.Ü. Hospital From Anesthesia Recovery Follow-up Form that had a total score of ≥12. The duration of awaking, extubation, admission to recovery unit and discharge from recovery unit as well as the complications observed and interventions made throughout the recovery period were compared. The durations of anesthesia, operation, awaking, extubation and discharge from the operation room were clinically insignificant but statistically significantly longer (p<0.05) in the mens from womens; the duration of staying in the recovery unit (Grup F: 33.37±14.88 min, Grup M: 32.80±15.55 min) and total recovery period for both Groups were similar. Various medical issues were observed which included nausea and vomiting, agitation, hypertension and tachycardia with 28% of the female and 49% of the male (p<0.05) during recovery. The SpO2 values were lower and systolic (SAP) and diastolic arterial pressures (DAP) were significantly higher in mens from womens (p<0.05). As a result, the present study revealed that recovery time from general anesthesia was similar in both female and male patients who underwent a bariatric surgery; however, the male patients were observed to have experienced recovery related problems more than female patients during the recovery, and the male patients had lower SpO2 values but higher HR, SAP and DAP values.
