Basel criterias and its practical study intended to be understood by SMEs

Observing possible effects on SMEs resulting from Basel-II Criterias, measuring points of views of SME?s on Basel Criterias constitute the main goal of this research. To what extent do the SMEs carry out Basel standards, economic policies, futures of financial markets and fluctiations in international markets have importance for their effects to our CountryIn theory stage of this study, descriptive research type is used by making literature review. In this stage, general information about small and medium sized enterprises and Basel criterias are given. Furthermore, in practice stage, survey research technique is benefited. As a survey tool, questionnaire is used. Questionnaire questions are formed by those which SMEs can understand Basel criterias. In first part of the questionnaire, some information related to demographic changes are ranked. In other parts of the questionnaire, four-likert type questions open and closed ended questions technique is benefited.Universe of the research is Ankara. Number of people working, acting in Ankara is shown as 0-250 people; and, enterprises whose last term annual terms are between 3.000.000 TL-25.000.000 TL are seen as small and medium sized enterprises. There are 5207 enterprises enlisted in Ankara Chamber of Industry and average enterprise number within our criterias about 2.500-3.000. 317 SMEs who have these criterias are questionnaired and 300 SMEs forms our sample without other 17 SMEs? inconsistent answers. Data used in the research were obtained via e-mails or questionnaires that were faxed or taken by the researcher himself. Survey results were evaluated in SPSS package program. In data analysis, they were done by benefitting from frequency values and by using crosstab analysis.According to the result of the research, it is determined that majority of SMEs have no information about Basel criterias. Moreover, it?s seen that present knowledge of viienterprises that have information are insufficient and they?re likely to have adaptation problems in this process.Key words: Basel 2 Criterias, SME, SME Credits, Capital Adequacy Ratio
