Abstract (EN)

Pulmonary embolism is one of the most common cardiovascular emergencies. The diagnosis of PE is difficult and it may be overlooked because it doesn't emerge as of a specific clinical condition (1). Elderly population is rapidly increasing in Turkeyas the whole world, as a consequence of it the PA and venous thromboembolism is seen more oftenin the emergency services. Also in recent years, advances in diagnostic methods have also increased the frequency of diagnosis of PE. The mortality rate in patients with PE who can not be diagnosed reaches 30%, this rate may be reduced to 3% when diagnosed and treated appropriately (3.5). In the majority of cases the source of thrombus in the deep veins of the lower extremities, especially the common femoral, superficial, femoral, and popliteal pelvic veins. Pulmonary angiography is still the gold standard in diagnosis (8). With the increase in the elderly population, pulmonary thromboembolism is becoming a diagnosis with high morbidity and mortality that emergency medicine physicians may face frequently. Thus, identification of risk factors and determination of these risk factors contributing to mortality is important for the determination of diagnosis and preventable risk factors. In this study, patients diagnosed with pulmonary embolism in Baskent University Ankara Hospital Adult Emergency Department from January 2011 to December 2015 were analyzed retrospectively. For all cases story, physical examination findings, laboratory findings, arterial blood gases, chest X-rays, risk factors, computed tomography, and echocardiography and lower extremity venous doppler for appropriate cases were examined and correlation between mortality and these variables were observed. A total of 146 patients were included in the study. Deaths in the first 30 days was considered premature death. In 13.7% of patients (20 patients) early mortality was determined. 90% of patients are at an age of 65 and over; and the remaining 10% were between the ages of 45-64. 55% of patients were male and 45% were female. Age, gender, d-dimer, creatinine, lymphocytes, pH and body temperature of the patients who diagnosed with PE in the emergency service, were correlated withearly mortality. Patients with previous surgery, malignancy, history of cardiac disease, history of neurological disease and immobility were found to be more likely to pulmonary embolism. Key words: Emergency service, pulmonary embolism, premature mortality
