The reception of the theme of "Faust" in western and Turkish cinema: A research in Atıf Yılmaz's "Arkadaşım Şeytan" and Taylor Hackford's "The Devil's Advocate"

The main purpose of this study is to reveal the way of how a Western subject is acquired in Turkish culture and art by making comparisons between the works related with the theme of Faust, which has an important place in Western cinema and has been processed by various authors throughout the history of Western literature and their current adaptations in Turkish and Western cinema. The theme of Faust originally dates backs to ancient times in terms of scrutinizing the issues that humanity has perhaps been thinking about since its existence such as the relationship between good and evil, the limitation of human beings, the problem of the balance between soul and body, and the effort to make sense of the world and the universe. In this direction, in the first part of the study, fictional figures and historical figures that can be considered as the pioneers of the Faust figure in terms of their work were mentioned and their contributions to the literary Faust figure were revealed. In the second part of the study, first of all Christopher Marlowe's The Tragical History Of Doctor Faustus was first examined during the Renaissance period on the values represented by the figures Faustus and Mephistophilis and the motif of dealing with the devil. Right after this, by examining Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's Faust through the Frankfurt School's critique of the Enlightenment and the basis was formed for the comparisons to be made in the third part of the study. In the last part of the study, the movie Arkadaşım Şeytan by Atıf Yılmaz, which is an adaptation of the theme of Faust to Turkish cinema, and the movie Devil's Advocate by Taylor Hackford, which is an adaptation of the theme of Faust to Western cinema, were examined comparatively through devil figures, Faust variations, negotiations with the devil and the motifs of dealing with the devil.
