Determination of reactions of some barley variaty and genotypes againts root rot agent bipolaris sorokiniana

Bipolaris sorokiniana causes root rot in barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) crops worldwide, resulting in reduced yield and significant economic losses. In order to prevent the excessive use of chemicals in the control of this disease, breeding studies for the development of disease resistant varieties are of strategic importance among environmentalist approaches. In this study, it was aimed to investigate the effects of soil borne Bipolaris sorokiniana pathogen provided by CIMMYT-SBP Program on root and root collar of barley lines and varieties. A total of 99 barley genotypes (13 cultivars and 86 lines) provided by the Gateway Agricultural Research Institute were used in the study. In addition, 6 wheat genotypes were also included in the analysis to evaluate the differences between barley and wheat. The susceptibility of 86 barley lines and 13 barley cultivars to Bipolaris sorokiniana was determined. According to the data obtained from the pathogenicity test: 1 line and Keser variety showed high susceptibility, 62 lines and İnce, Kalaycı 97, Cumhuriyet 50, Ünver, Yüksel, Enginel 90, Özdemir, Sabribey, Larende and Burakbey varieties showed moderate susceptibility, 13 lines and Çıldır 02 variety showed moderate resistance, 12 lines and Hamidiye 85 variety showed high resistance. Among wheat genotypes, Bezostaja, Kiziltan, Kutluk, 2.49, Sunco and Altai varieties showed high resistance. This research identifies barley and wheat varieties that can be used as resistant in areas where Bipolaris sorokiniana is a problem and shows that these varieties can be used strategically in breeding studies.
