Some companion planting effect on yield and quality of kohlraby (Brassica oleracea var. gongylodes )

The effect of companion plant production, which is one of the practices carried out for a sustainable agriculture, on the yield and some quality parameters in kohlrabi (Brassica oleracea var gogylodes) was investigated. Broad bean was selected as the companion plant. Marigold was used as the repelling plant. To observe the effect of each combination, production plots were formed with different combinations. Four application combinations were organized including the control application (AxA) formed with sole kohlrabi planting, the kohlrabi-marigold (AxK), the kohlrabi-broad bean (AxB), and the kohlrabi-broad bean-marigold (AxBxK) combinations. It was observed that the AxB application yielded good results in most of the parameters discussed in the study. The highest diameter, height, weight values related to the stem, which is the consumed part of the kohlrabi, were obtained from the AxB application and the highest efficiency was determined to be 1074.7 kg/da. The lowest yield was determined in the AxA control application with 670.8 kg/da. The highest stem hardness was obtained from the AxBxK application (35.08 N). The application with the highest total soluble solids was the AxK application 8.8% whereas the lowest result was obtained from the AxA control application with 7.47%. Weed combat is one of the important issues in olericulture. From this point of view, the AxBxK application gave the lowest result with an average of 9.3 weeds per parcel whereas the highest value was determined in the AxA control application 28.7 weeds per parcel. The results showed that companion plant applications in kohlrabi growing had positive effects on yield, quality and weed control. Conducting a wide range of experiments with different plants and additional parameters, the effects of this method should be monitored in olericulture and put into application.
