Evaluation of bisphenol A amount and public health risk in some canned foods

Bisphenol A is one of the chemical compounds that poses a risk to human health and is also used in the production of packaging materials that come into contact with food. Foodstuffs, especially canned foods to which Bisphenol A passes through the packaging materials are responsible for human exposure to Bisphenol A In our study, it was aimed to reveal the presence of BPA in canned foods offered for sale in Turkey and the public health risk depends on this. In this study, 33 canned tuna (Group I) from 13 different companies, 13 canned fish (Group II) from 8 different companies, 10 canned meat-chicken- turkey (Group III) (in the samples of the same company, different can types and different contents were noted) from 8 different companies, which are offered for sale in supermarkets and on the internet in different provinces in Turkey, were used. A total of 56 samples belonging to 23 different companies, were analyzed for the presence of Bisphenol A by HPLC method and a public health risk assessment was made accordingly. As a result of the analyses, 0.08 μg/kg-51.94 μg/kg average 12.44±2.34 μg/kg in Group I, 0.27 μg/kg - 130.51 μg/kg average 15.50±10.08 μg/kg in Group II, 0.54 μg/kg - 69.61 μg/kg in Group III and as an average of these three groups 11.23±6.62 μg/kg. was determined . No statistically significant difference was found between the study (P>0.05). In addition, when compared of sauce-free and oily/ saucely canned foods in the study groups in terms of BFA values,, there was no statistically significant difference between the groups and within the group (P>0.05). When the consumption amounts of different canned products and the determined average amounts of Bisphenol A are evaluated, the estimated daily exposure for men and women, respectively, is 0.0037-0.0042 μg/kg body weight day in Group I, 0.0046-0.0052 μg/kg body weight day in Group II and 0.0033-0.0038 μg/kg body weight day in Group III, was found. BPA was found in the analyzed samples; however, it was detected that the determined values were below the limits determined as the daily exposure amount. In addition, considering the amount of BPA that may come from different sources and be exposed by the total diet, it is seen that the contamination in the analyzed products is remarkable in terms of public health.
