Investigation of the empathic tendencies and leadership tendencies of physical education teachers and trainers (Samsun provincial example)

In this study, empathic tendencies and leadership orientations of physical education teachers and coaches were examined in terms of profession, gender, age, professional working years, and sports branch variables. A total of 174 people, 46 female and 128 male participants from physical education and trainers working in Samsun, participated in the study. The data of the study were collected using the "personal information form", the "Empathic Tendency Scale (EES)" developed by Dökmen (1988) and the "Multidimensional Leadership Orientations Scale (CYLYS)" developed by Dursun, Günay and Yenel (2019). Descriptive statistics, t-test and one-way analysis of variance were used in the analysis of the data. In order to determine the source of the difference between groups, LSD Post Hoc. analysis was used. According to the results of the analysis, there is a statistically significant difference between the empathic tendency levels of the participants in terms of the occupational variable, and the charismatic and structural leadership levels from the MLOS sub-dimensions (p<0.05). Physical education teachers' empathic tendency, political, charismatic and structural leadership dimensions from the sub-dimensions of MLOS and gender variable; While there was no statistically significant difference between the variables of age and professional years of work, and the sub-dimensions of empathic disposition and MLOS (p>0.05); There is a statistically significant difference between the gender variable and the human-based leadership dimension (p<0.05). On the other hand, there was no statistically significant difference between the empathic disposition, MLOS sub-dimensions of the trainers and the variables of gender, age, professional years of work and sports branch (p>0.05). In addition, a statistically significant positive relationship was found between the empathic tendency levels of physical education teachers and the MLOS sub-dimensions, and the empathic tendency of the coaches and the political and human-based leadership levels from the MLOS sub-dimensions. As a result, empathic tendency levels of physical education teachers and coaches are higher than physical education teachers, and charismatic and structural leadership levels are higher than physical education teachers. It can be said that as the level of empathic tendency of the participants increases, the levels of multi-dimensional leadership orientation increase and the participants who are also coaching together with physical education teachers have a high level of empathic tendency and charismatic and structural leadership.
