Investigating the relationship between participation to environmental spare time activities and environmental attitudes of physical education and sports teachers? and high school students? in Sincan district of Ankara

The relationship between participation to environmental spare time activities and environmental attitudes of the physical education and sports teachers and the high school students who take physical education & sports course in Sincan district of Ankara is investigated in this research.All the physical education & sports teachers working in Sincan district of Ankara and all the high school students in the same district who took physical education & sports course in the 2008-2009 academik year are the target population of the study. The volunteer physical education & sports teachers and the randomly selected ninth, tenth, eleventh and twelfth-grade students attending to various high schools in the same district are the sample of the study.In the study, in order to determine the environmental attitudes and participation to environmental spare time activities of physical education & sports teachers and high school students who took physical education and sports course, Environmental Attitudes Questionnaire and Participation to Environmental Spare Time Activities Questionnaire are used. To analyze the data collected through these instruments, SPSS 15.0 statistical analyses package program is used. Descriptive results are presented through the mean scores and frequency distributions, and inferential results are analyzed through one-way ANOVA, t-test and Pearson Product Moment Correlation tests.Results show that both the physical education and sports teachers and the high school students, who took physical education and sports course, had positive attitudes towards environment. Although, both the teachers and students stated that they do not spend enough time to participate in environmental spare time activities; they say that they can follow the environmental issues from the media and they try to share their knowledge about the environment with their friends. While a significant negative correlation was found between participation to environmental spare time activities and environmental attitudes for the students, no significant correlation can be found for the teachers.
