Transformation of the concept of shame through the physical bodyinto artwork

This thesis examines the representation and transformation of shame as an aesthetic experience in art. It analyzes how shame becomes visible through various artistic disciplines at both individual and societal levels. The study aims to reveal the role of shame as an aesthetic and conceptual tool in social critique and individual confrontation processes. The thesis is divided into three main chapters. The first chapter addresses the psychological and sociological dimensions of shame, discussing its effects on individuals and society. A literature review investigates the role of shame in how individuals conform to social norms, as well as its historical and cultural shaping. The second chapter explores the representation of shame in art history up to the modern era, evaluating themes such as individual experience, social norms, the traumatic impacts of war and genocide, identity and alienation, as well as social injustice. The third chapter analyzes the transformation of shame into an aesthetic experience and its application as a tool for social critique through artistic works produced within the scope of this thesis. By focusing on the conceptual processes involved in sculptural forms, it discusses the transformative power of art in bridging individual emotions with social critique. The thesis concludes that making shame visible through art fosters confrontation, critique, and healing at both individual and societal levels. In this context, the transformation of shame into an aesthetic expression through art emerges as a powerful mechanism for both individual liberation and the enhancement of social awareness, empowering individuals to explore and confront their own emotions.
