Aleyna Bozoğlu, Character Analysis of Benjamin Britten's Peter Grimes Opera and Evaluation from the Perspective of Musical Identity in the Sociopolitical Context of Its Era, Başkent University Institute of Social Sciences, Performance-Based Master's Program, 2025. Benjamin Britten, as one of the most significant composers in the 20th-century opera world, has deeply addressed individual and social conflicts through a rich musical and dramatic perspective in his operas. This study aims to analyze the characters in Benjamin Britten's Peter Grimes opera and evaluate its musical identity within the sociopolitical conditions of its time. Britten is a highly successful composer whose artistic identity and music have influenced the art of his era. Some of his operas, particularly Peter Grimes, are among the most important works that have shaped the modern art and music world. His operas have earned a distinctive place not only in his own time but also in today's art scene due to both their musical features and the themes they emphasize. Benjamin Britten is a pacifist composer who values individual freedom and opposes authoritarian regimes. Notably known for his pacifist stance, Britten strongly reflected his anti-war thoughts and criticisms against politicians who endorsed war during World War II in his operas. Moreover, due to living a life that conflicted with societal norms and moral rules of his time, he experienced alienation from society. This alienation appears in his operas as the theme of estrangement from the society he lived in. In this context, it can be argued that Britten's operas were shaped not only by aesthetic concerns but also by post-war traumas and personal identity struggles. This study focuses on his most representative opera, perhaps the mirror of his thoughts: Peter Grimes. By examining the character, themes, and musical elements in this opera, the study explores Britten's musical identity and political context in light of the general characteristics of his era. In Peter Grimes, themes such as the individual-society relationship, identity search, and social exclusion stand out. The theme of alienation in these works is associated with Britten's personal experience of marginalization. Adopting a critical approach to societal norms, Britten deeply reflects the individual's internal struggles through both musical and dramatic structures in these works. The composer's homosexual identity and how this identity was shaped under social pressures permeate the thematic and musical textures of his works. Additionally, the moral and cultural conflicts present in England's social structure during and after the war hold a significant place in Britten's operas.
