Bergres wind power plant in bergama and theinvestigation of bird migration mobility in itssurrounding

Abstract (EN)

This study was carried out in order to observe bird migration mobility around BERGRES wind power plant located in Bergama, Izmir and to detect other bird species spreading in the region. In the spring and autumn migration periods, 45 days follow-up was performed in the BERGRES plant and in the vicinity of BERGRES on 20 January-11 December 2017.According to the results of observation, examination and evaluation studies, 90 bird species belonging to 39 families from 18 teams in the research area and its vicinity were detected. 36 of these species are domestic (D), 25 of them are summer visitors (SV), 17 are of them are winter visitors (WV) and 12 are transit migrants (TM). In the ornithological monitoring activities carried out in and around the project field, birds that were flying above the wing level and birds that could be affected by the wing movements of the turbines were observed particularly as target bird species. In this context, 1083 individuals of 21 target birds were observed. Larus michahellis which is resident in the region was the most observed bird with its 235 individuals in 56 flights. The least observed bird species in the region were found to be Falco eleonorae, Pelecanus crispus, Falco subbuteo and Tadorna ferruginea with their 1 individual in 1 flight.Moreover, the flight heights of all the target species and horizontal flight distances in regards to turbines were recorded separately.When the average flight height and average horizontal distance from the ground were evaluated, Podiceps ruficollishas the lowest flight height with 1 meter from the ground and Pelecanus crispus has the highest flight height with 200 meter. In addition, the closest species to the turbines according to the horizontal flight distance is the Falco eleonorae. Pelecanus crispus has the farthest flight to turbines with 1000 meter. During the observations, 934 bird individuals were registered in 371 flights (transitions) flying around turbines. Of these 371 flights, (13%) 48 were within the wing swept area and (87%) 323 were outside of the swept area. Of the 934 individuals, (14%) 134 were found in the turbine swept area, and (86%) 800 were detected outside the turbine swept area. According to results of carcass studies, dead or injured birds were not found.
