Comparison of the cities of Bursa and Istanbul in the context of city and civilization in the novels of Five Cities

Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar's importance in Turkish Literature and many studies and publications about this author are known. Studies containing Tanpınar's views on the city and urbanism are generally aimed at revealing his literary and philosophical perspective. In this study, apart from this aspect of Tanpınar, City and Civilization will be tried to be examined in terms of both literary and art history and urbanism. Novels space; It is a literary genre created based on narrative by using concepts such as person, event, time together. The space discussed here includes a closed place such as a workplace, residence, educational institution, but it can also be a neighborhood, street or city in which these spaces are located. As there are many works written on this subject in today's world literature, many writers in the field of Turkish literature have dealt with the subject of the city. One of the cities that started with the Tanzimat and is frequently discussed in Turkish novelism, and the most notable one is Istanbul, and the other is Bursa. In addition to being the capital of the Ottoman Empire, having remarkable natural beauties, especially the Bosphorus, Eyüp, and hosting many natural beauties such as Tarabya, the economic, social, cultural conditions and many historical features of the people living in these regions were effective in the choice of Istanbul and its frequent presence in novels. Bursa, on the other hand, has a remarkable value in terms of both its natural beauty and being the first capital city, as well as keeping the Ottoman lifestyle alive until very recently. The cities of Istanbul and Bursa have been one of the most important places that novelists frequently discussed and used, starting from the Tanzimat and later periods when the first novels of Turkish Literature were seen.
