5th grade students of elemantry school metacognitive reading comprehension and reading motivations and readin level between relationship

In this research, the metacognitive awareness of reading comprehension of 5th grade students and their reading motivation have been investigated in terms of various variables and the relationship between the levels of reading has been identified. The research planned according to the survey model consisted of 2918 students and the sample group contained 600 5th grade students. The metacognitive awareness of reading comprehension of the students has been observed by ?The Metacognitive Awareness of Reading Comprehension Scale?, their reading motivations with ?The Reading Motivation Scale? and their levels of reading with ?The Fill-in-the Blanks Test?. The data obtained were appropriately encoded for SPSS 16.0.As a result of this research, a significant difference between the variables with regard to gender of students, location of school and financial affordability of their families, and their metacognitive awareness of reading comprehension grades has been observed while, compared to the others who read a lot, no meaningful difference has been determined. There has been a significant difference between reading motivation and gender, whereas no significant difference has been observed between financial affordability of the families and sub-comparative dimension of internal ? external motivations. On the other hand, a meaningful difference has been identified between the sub-dimensions of external motivations related to idea of being recognized, sociability and conformity. When the reading levels are concerned, the level of independent reader has been assessed as having the highest medium in relation with the metacognitive awareness of reading comprehension and reading motivation. It has been determined that there is an average relationship between the reading levels and the metacognitive awareness of reading comprehension. In addition, a low level of relationship between reading motivation and its sub-dimensions has been assessed.Key Words: The Metacognitive Awareness of Reading Comprehension, Reading Motivation, Reading Level, 5th Grade Students.
