The impact of Bayt al-Hikmah on the development of the Islamic theology

Bayt al-Hikmah is an institution that left its mark on the history of Islamic thought. This institution has influenced the development of many branches of science, especially Isla-mic philosophy and Islamic theology (al-kalâm). The impact of Bayt al-Hikmah on the Islamic Theology has occurred through the trans-lation activities, copyright studies and scientific debates carried out in this institution. Transla-tion activities constitute the largest part of the impact. The translations on the science of logic here have made a serious contribution to creat a discourse against the intellectual attacks of the members of other religions. Also, the translations made on the philosophical sciences inc-reased the topics covered by Islamic thelogy, especially contributed to the more systematic and detailed handling of the the topics related to physics and cosmology, namely daqīq al-kalām. In addition to these, the copyright studies also produced the same result. The scholars of Islamic theology had the opportunity to put forward more systematic views on cosmologi-cal issues thanks to the translations made in Bayt al-Hikmah. They have written many works that contained refutations against Greek philosophers on these issues, as well as copyrighted works against each other's views. It is also important to translate the works of Greek thought and the Bible in Bayt al-Hikmah. Thr systematic and consistent refusals were written to mem-bers of other religions thanks to the academic studies. Besides the translations made in Bayt al-Hikmah, the dealing of the issues with Islamic theology through debates also contributed to the development process of this science. The aim of this study, in which the literature review, comparison and discourse analysis method will be used, is to reveal the effect of Bayt al-Hikmah on the development of Islamic theology.
