The effect of the mathematical knowledge background of the computer education students to their undergraduate education

The purpose of the study is to find out and learn the existing knowledge background of the first year students about the general mathematic who came to the computer education department, and then investigate their existing knowledge levels and their success levels. The study is limited with 2005-2006 years. The population of the study is composed by the first year undergraduate students from the department of computer education in the Industrial Arts Education Faculty. The sample is sellected randomly form these first year students. For this purpose, two questionnaire and a test composed of the ÖSS questions were given to the students to determine the mathematic levels of the students. The results of the questionnaire and the test were transferred to the computer environment and reached to the solutions of the problems. According to these findings; the gender difference of the students does not have any affect on the students? academic achievement. The mathematical background and the graduated high school type have an important effect on the perception of the General Mathematic course. Bound to this result the success level of the students effected the general achievement scoures in a positive way. In other words who has a strongest mathematical background has a strongest chance to be succesful in this department. At the end of the study, bound to the results of the study, some suggestions were given by the researcher.
