Effect of computer and internet use on success and permanency in social studies teaching

Abstract (EN)

In recent years, new technological developments have been added to our daily lives, many societies have difficulty in catching up to the speed of technological development. The developments in science and technology are used in almost every field and education is one of these areas. In this study, the effect of usage of computer and internet technologies (smart board, smart phone, tablet computer, laptop etc.) on success and permanance of teaching in Social Studies learning environments were investigated. The research was carried out in accordance with the semi – experimental pattern model with pretest-finaltest experimental/control group. In this study, "Social Studies achievement test", "Social Studies course attitude scale", "Social Studies teachers ' approach to information and Communication Technologies" was used as data collection tool for 5th grades. The research was carried out in Osmangazi Secondary School in Kocaeli province Gebze district by conducting experiments with both 34 students in 5-A and 5-C classes in the first semester of 2017-2018 academic year. Results obtained from the study were analyzed using the SPSS package program and the average scores of the groups were calculated. The t test was used for intra-group and inter-group comparisons and the meaning level was taken as a maximum of 0.05 confidence level. The results of the research are as follows: In the 5th grade Social Studies course, there is a significant difference between the academic success of the students in the experimental group using computer and Internet technologies and the academic success of the students in the control group in favor of the experimental group. In the 5th grade Social Studies course, there is a significant difference between the academic success permanence of the students in the experimental group using computer and Internet technologies and the academic success permanence of the students in the control group in favor of the experimental group. In the 5th grade Social Studies course, there is a significant difference between the attitudes of the students in the experimental group using computer and Internet technologies and the attitudes of the students in the control group regarding Social Studies course, in favor of the experimental group. Social Studies Teachers have been able to use technological tools such as computers and the internet at a satisfactory level, using the technological tools such as cell phones, smart boards and computers whilethey are teaching. In addition, It has been concluded that teachers have e-mail accounts, they know to use various MS Office software, they have an external electronic storage device and they keep their documents in these devices but they do not know about what web 2.0 software is.
