Abstract (EN)

The aim of this thesis is to investigate the influence and activities of Abdullah Cevdet, who has an intellectual profile in the process of modernization / Westernization, which began in the Ottoman Empire in the nineteenth century and continued until the first years of the republican regime. Abdullah Cevdet sees the effects of the Westernization adventure in the Ottoman Empire during his education in the Imperial School of Medicine years when he was a religious student. In this way, Cevdet began to be interested in the Western ideologies in the growing age and found the Western type of reforms in the empire insufficient. As a result, he started an opposition movement which could be defined as political and intellectual by taking the exile against the Ottoman administration, especially Abdul Hamid II. Abdullah Cevdet continued his opposition to the sultan by taking part in the Young Turk movement at the centers of Geneva, mainly in Geneva and Cairo. Abdullah Cevdet, who continued his opposition by taking part in the Young Turk movement in European cities such as Paris and Cairo, mainly in Geneva, has a super Westernist intellectual profile, after he established Ictihad magazine instead of being a political figure. The discussion will be carried out taking into account the life and ideas of Abdullah Cevdet within the framework of Western ideologies entered into the Ottoman Empire through certain institutions and literary circles during the Westernization process. The main sources used for this study are Abdullah Cevdet's articles, which were published in various journals, especially in Ictihad magazine, and the books of Abdullah Cevdet.
