Comparison of neutrophil/lymphocyte (NLR), platelet/lymphocyte (PLR), monocyte/lymphocyte (MLR) ratios and mean platelet volume (MPV) of patients in bipolar disorder attack period with patients with borderline personality disorder and healthy population

In our study, we compared the NLR, PLR, MLR, MPV and other hemogram parameters of those diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder (BD), Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) and healthy controls. With the help of these markers, we aimed to reveal the possible relationship between inflammation and the aforementioned psychopathologies. In our study, 90 patients with BD in the attack phase (70 manic, 20 depressive) diagnosed according to DSM-5 diagnostic criteria and 90 patients with BPD diagnosed according to DSM-5 diagnostic criteria were included. As the control group, 90 people without any psychiatric disease according to DSM-5 were included in the study. Sociodemographic-clinical data of all participants and hemogram parameters were retrospectively analyzed, recorded and compared. The MPV value was found to be lower in the BD patient group compared to the BBP and control groups, and the difference was significant. There was no significant difference between the groups in terms of NLR, PLR, MLR and other hemogram parameters. Since valproate may affect hemogram values, patients using valproate were excluded and when hemogram values were compared between the same three groups; The NLR value of the BD patient group was higher than that of the control group, and the difference was significant. When the hemograms of the patients using and not using valproate were compared, significant differences were found between the groups. It was determined that patients using valproate had lower platelet, NLR, PLR values. Our study was conducted to contribute to the neuroinflammatory hypotheses that are thought to be associated with the etiology of BD and BPD. With the effect of psychotropic drugs used in the treatment of these diseases, hemogram parameters may be affected. In addition to being retrospective, our study was conducted with a small patient population. For this reason, it would be more appropriate to conduct comprehensive studies with larger and homogeneous patient groups after standardization of treatment is achieved. So much so that more studies are needed to better elucidate the relationship between BD, BPD and other psychiatric diseases and inflammation.
