The relationship between insight and coping attidues at the bipolar disorder patients

Bipolar disorder is a disease that causes serious disability and persists. It is thought that determining the insight and coping attitudes that affect the patient's compliance with treatment and disease will positively affect the prognosis of the disease. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between insight and coping attitudes in bipolar disorder patients. This descriptive study was carried out with 127 volunteer patients who were admitted to outpatient clinics of Psychiatry Department of a university hospital and were diagnosed with bipolar disorder according to DSM-5 and who were in euthymic period. As data collection tools; Personal Information Form, Beck Cognitive Insight Scale (BCIS) and Scale of Coping Attitudes (COPE) were used. Data were analyzed with IBM SPSS 24. The mean score of the patients BCIS was 2.83±6.38 and the mean COPE score was 142.96±20.30. We found positive correlations between the COPE total score and the total score of the BCIS and also the self-expression score of the BCIS subscale. It was determined that there was a significant positive correlation between BCIS subscale and total scores and coping attitudes towards compliance with COPE subscales (p<0.05). It was determined that there was a positive significant relationship between insight score and total coping scores of the patients and coping attitudes towards adaptation. We found that patients when the level of insight increased, the coping attitudes towards adaptation were used more. In this study, it has been shown that individuals with high self-expression can cope more effectively with the situations they face.
