Sociological examination of makeup as a body modification: Instagram example

This thesis is based on a research titled "Sociological Examination of Makeup as a Body Modification: The Example of Instagram". The aim of the thesis is to examine the sociological dimension of the body and to deal with this issue within the framework of Mike Featherstone's body modification concept. After examining the body from a sociological perspective, while dealing with the use of make-up among men in Turkey within the framework of Mike Featherstone and his body modification conceptualization, this research focuses on the concept of body modification in order to understand the social construction of the body, while also taking into account the history of make-up and its relationship with social media. takes. The sociological dimension of the body is emphasized. In this context, it is examined how the body is handled in biological, political, political and sociological perspectives from past to present. Mike Featherstone's body modification conceptualization is explained in detail and within the framework of this concept, the historical, cultural, social and individual effects of body modification, social perceptions and attitudes, the relationship between gender and identity, ethical dimensions, trends and its place in popular culture are analyzed. The study proceeds from the perspective of masculinity studies, in which queer theory is integrated with the concepts of men, masculinity and masculinity. In this context, hegemonic masculinity and alternative masculinity concepts are emphasized. In addition, the analysis of the social media posts of men who wear make-up within the framework of queer theory is included in the thesis along with the discourse analysis of the comments on these posts. Comments are divided into three categories: hate-oriented, religious and sexist speech. In this study, the sociological examination of the body, the reasons for making body modifications, the history and social dimensions of make-up as a body modification (painting), and finally, what make-up is used for today, unlike the past, are revealed.
