Abstract (EN)

Although disciplines of architecture has created a wide range of design and application area, spaces for limited user groups is considered more than public places. Most of the time architecture in the city that holds a large amount of building stock, is interested in indoors. Whereas, if we consider the city as a building metaphor; it has corridors, halls, walls and windows. Urban space characterizes each of the city's room. City is the sum of these rooms which fed by another. In the city's porous structure, urban space is the venue where there is interaction between the buildings. The city comprised of mass and gaps. The city's occupancy, or in other words, the positive areas forming structures are elements that surround the urban space. in the study the part of the interaction between body and urban components is discussed with "surface" concept. The surface is defined as "Communicated boundary" is thought to have significant potential as an interactive tool that enables spatial city's livability. Urban space is a transformative living space, is defined by its boundaries and the communication with the town-dweller. This study is an understanding of spatial effects of surfaces as an interaction tool, created due to this interaction, and contribution of surfaces to the urban space in terms of its potentials. It is considered that, the smallest interaction element is 'surface' in the urban space. This interaction is the first step towards to an understanding of the whole city. In this thesis, surface deals with surroundings of the space, the features for the functions in the urban space, determining the spaces and the actions without defining inside and outside, being multi dimensional or two dimensional, transforming into a subject that is focused, transforming into a silhouette according to the observing point or can be a tool for one to one contact. Exploring the city and space is realized through the transformative effect of the body movement in its urban space. Experiencing urban space through walking is valuable in the sense of its new potentials for the development of urban space is precious in terms of transport. The body communicates urban space by walking, through surroundings developing spatial awareness, an integrated urban experience is a fictionalized environment which restructured social relations and spatial belonging. The working methods of the thesis consists od the theoretical framework set out in the public space, body experience and put forth various arguments over the surface of which are developed on supported examples. Urban surroundings context by considering the surface, which fictionalized the relationship with the body through the action of this surface interaction and potential for transformation through this interaction are discussed and illustrated. These discussions were concluded over a surface reading experience through examining selected route. The route for the study, it is not designated as a special route for body surfing in the city. Urban space experience that focuses on the body movement can be done any public space in the city. Regarding the outlook in the flow of everyday life, requires a smooth narration of experience, not through observation of still images. In this sense, it accrues the link between the spaces by walking action, reveals the dynamics of the organization of space is being handled by a "cinematographic" narration. It is observed that the surfaces affects the rhythm of walking and other body actions in urban space. Along the route observing new actions reveal new spatial sizes and triggered potentials. Repetitive action cases in everyday life in the city, and alternative usages or non-interactive situations are decoded through the eyes of moving observer body. Scope of the study is to answer the following questions: • How it can be defined by the surface of urban space? • How does the interaction between the surfaces and the body creates a spatiality? • Is it possible to improve the quality of space with the new spatial sizes which is created by personal urban space experience? In the first section, by introducing a work area describes the method of research. In the second chapter deals with spatial size defined by surfaces in the expression of urban surroundings. New situations that construct the surface in line with changing spatial qualities, a perspective that today's recent past has been demonstrated in cases of new urban space. Emphasizing the importance of the body in defining the interaction Attention is drawn to the sensory dimensions of urban space. The third section of the surface has been expressed within the framework of interaction which caused actions; In cases where the interaction do not occur, the body's blocked. spatial, operational and sensory. The act of walking is one of the basic body movements, ensuring the car-free pedestrian's body in contact with the space and the urban transformation dynamics of the city is expected to design. In the fourth part of this spatial interaction potential it was monitored via a route through the surface of the city. Identification of different places in the Karakoy-Beyoglu route is intended to capture the new spatiality an individual and unique look. Re-creation of the city through the eyes of an individual or individuals to make of venue space through actions, constitutes the basis of the communication cycle.
