Abstract (EN)
Today one of the areas that language and culture practices have constructed is social media. The gender discourse that has been (re)produced and disseminated through social media will be examined, in this study, with a focus on the Wattpad platform. It will problematize whether Wattpad, as a new cultural style mostly associated with the youth, could be regarded as a subculture or not, and if the stories on the platform carry a sexist discourse or not. To analyze the stories on the platform, the theoretical framework put forward by the British Cultural Studies will be employed. For this purpose, a story selected from Wattpad was analyzed through Norman Fairclough's Critical Discourse Analysis method. The analysis has shown provided convincing evidence that the Wattpad platform contributes to a narrative style which degrades socio-political matters to personal issues and legimitizes masculine domination, especially violence against women, and that it (re)creates a cultural environment for production of sexist discourses which humiliate and trivialize women
