İzmit people house as a folk education institute (1932-1951)

Reforms in social, cultural, legal and economic fields were put into action during the Republican period from 1923 till 1938 under the leadership of Atatürk aiming to make radical changes in social life. For these reforms to reach the target it was necessary to educate the society very rapidly and the mission involving social, cultural, democratic qualities was given to the public houses. Public houses were always on the agenda in Turkey for 19 years and played a very important role in social and cultural structure of the society through not only their publications also face to face interactions with people.The study is started to determine İzmit Public House?s place among other public houses and its activities and contributions to the city culture as it was a very important and common educational institute in terms of our history of the Republic. Local newspapers and documents related to İzmit Public House in the archive of the Republic were analyzed detailed to be able to give correct information in this study. After its documents were ciphered, activities- 1932-1951- of the 9 branches were presented. İzmit Public House opened courses such as reading and writing, foreign language, courses in prisons, courses for students in need of making up, violin, chorus and library which has constantly improving number of readers and did a lot to improve the education standard and help people improve themselves.Consequently, İzmit Public House not only worked to enlighten people but also spread the thought coming from the Republic to the people from every walk of life., İzmit Public House played an important role through opening courses, acting, exhibitions and some other work when educational and art institutes couldn?t get fully organized.
