TELEVISION SOAP OPERA NARRATIVE SCHEMEÇiğdem TAŞletişim Anabilim DalıAnadolu Üniversitesi Sosyal Bilimler Enstitüsü, Haziran 2006Danışman: Prof. Dr. Dursun GÖKDAĞNarratives date back with the historical-cultural memery of humankind. Narratives have been themain points of life since the myths and tales. There is a common structural specific for every kindof narratives such as religious stories, public myths, advertisement texts or soap operas. While reading and watching a narrative, basically we are interested in its story. But in order tomake a fluent story, we have to make some choices to lead our readings. There are some basicquestions such as in which chronologic order the story should be told, or how to reflect the time ofthe stories coming out. Here we see the French semiologist J.A. Greimas who developes the theory of ?narratives syntax :quartet syntax?. This theory aims to show how the story structured. Greimas claims that everystory text has a common structural base and can be put forward with ?Narrative Scheme? method.Narrative Scheme method has four main stages : introduction, acquisition, performance andconclusion. At the introduction part, generally the story begins by realizing a missing part in theevent. The subject begins to act to supply the missing part and the narrative starts. At theacquisition part, the subject acquires the necessary abilities and power to supply the missing part. The third part, where the subject passes the acquisition stage successfully and achieves his/her aim,is the performance part. Finally the conclusion part is the stage where the subject receives his/herprice by achieving the aim or faces with a punishment by experiencing a failure. In this Project the soap opera named ?Bir stanbul Masalı?(An stanbul Story) is analysed byGreimas? ?Narrative Scheme? method. The aim of this Project is to prove whether the soap operanamed ?Bir stanbul Masalı? have the four-staged process (introduction, acqusition, performanceand conclusion ) of Greimas? narrative .In accordance with this aim , the first 40 episodes of the soap opera named ?Bir stanbul Masalı?have been studied and as a result of this study two narrative scheme have been found. The firstnarrative scheme results with the failure of the subject on the way of reaching her object and thesecond part starts. The second narrative scheme results with the subject?s success of reaching heraim. Thus, the soap opera named ?Bir stanbul Masalı? is in compliance with the introduction, acquisition, performance and conclusion stages in terms of development of the narrative schemeand the transformation of the performers.
