The effect of using a self cure universal adhesive with different desensitizing toothpastes on the dentin bond strength

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of the use of Tokuyama universal adhesive, which a newly developed self-cure universal adhesive, with different desensitizing toothpastes on dentin shear bond strength. 50 permanent third molar teeth were used in our study. After removing the roots of all teeth, enamel surfaces were removed, and buccal and lingual dentin surfaces were exposed. All teeth were sanded with 600, 800, 1000 grit silicon carbide papers respectively, and randomly divided into 5 groups. Group 1: Sensodyne Repair and Protect, Group 2: Ipana Pro-Expert (Sensitive protection), Group 3: Colgate Sensitive Pro-relief, Group 4: Prevdent toothpaste, Group 5: Control. Brushing was performed with an electric toothbrush (Oral B Professionel Care Triumph) 2 times a day for 15 days for 15 seconds. No toothpaste was applied to the control group. Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) was used to evaluate the toothpastes used for dentinal tubule occlusion. After desensitizing toothpaste application each group was divided into 2 subgroups; Clearfil SE-Bond (CSB) and Tokuyama universal bond (TUB). After the adhesive was applied, Filtek Z 250 (B3, 3M ESPE, St Paul, MN, USA), a microhybrid universal composite resin, was applied to all sample surfaces according to the application instructions. Then all samples were aged with a total of 5,000 cycles with the thermal cycle device. The shear bond strength test was performed with the universal test machine. The data were analyzed two-way ANOVA and post hoc Tukey test (p≤0,05). When the data obtained in our study were evaluated, the highest mean bond strength value among all groups was observed in the CSB subgroup of Group 5; the lowest mean bond strength value was observed in the TUB subgroup of Group 4. All CSB subgroups showed statistically higher bond strength values than TUB subgroups. Group 4 showed lower bond strength values compared to the control groups regardless of the adhesive system used. The self-cure universal adhesive resin, used in our study, did not exhibit a high bond strength performance as Clearfil SE-bond, which is considered the gold standard in self-etch systems. In vivo and in vitro studies are needed for the bond strength of newly developed self-cure universal adhesives.
