Daruleytam as a socail service institution

Children and among them destituded and orphan children are the most important issue in each period of history and in every society. They are one of the main target groups of social policy due to their disadvantaged stuation in reaching various opportunities. In this sense, the Ottoman was one of the most important centers. Since, Ottoman has carried out many exemplary practices regarding the issue of bringing these sections into society. In Ottoman history, many units have been established by society and the state in order to meet the needs of orphans such as especially accommodation, subsistence, having a healthy life, access to educational opportunities and increasing their employability etc. During the last term of Ottoman, nearly 150-year period, which war and turmoil became more intense, there was a need to increase these efforts more. Daruleytam (orphans' house, orphanage) is one of the institutions engaged in activities related to orphans. Darüleytams were established in order to find solutions to the situation of orphan and destitute children, an important social problem during the most difficult periods of the Ottoman. In this study, in which the historical process, which is mainly accompanied by primary sources, was addressed, it was tried to reveal the policies and activities carried out by the Daruleytam institution towards the orphans with a social policy perspective, and it was questioned whether the institution reached the establishment target.
