Review of the contents and implementation of the disaster plan of a university hospital

The most important characteristic of a healthcare organization is to provide a continuous and accessible service. Therefore, healthcare organizations are required to provide a safe environment for their staff and patients, to ensure a continuity of care, and to plan the required resources in case of a disaster.By means of this study, Hospital Disaster Plan prepared by a university hospital has been reviewed with regard to its content and implementation standing. An Evaluation Form for Hospital Disaster Plan has been prepared in order to be used during the review. The Form consists of two parts; one of which is ?Planning Evaluation? while the other one is ?Implementation Score?.In conclusion of the evaluation, it is determined that Hospital Disaster Plan is of basic factors that must be available in a disaster plan. However, it is seen that the plan has not been detailed yet in compliance with the organization's structure in the evaluation executed in line with planning and implementation of plan within the scope of this study and has not been put into practice as much as required.All disaster plans established must be realistic, applicable, updated, known by everybody and tested periodically by trials, most importantly all disaster plans must be integrated with each other.Disaster plans that institutions prepare by themselves are not sufficient individually. Because relevant communications must be ensured with other institutions and organizations in line with receiving and sending aid in case of a disaster.Putting hospital disaster plans into practice in coordination with other institutions, organizations and non-governmental organizations as a part of national disaster plan will minimize loss and damages due to the disaster.
