Evaluation of sleep quality and affecting factors in A medical faculty research assistants

Abstract (EN)

Adequate, regular and quality sleep is one of the healthy lifestyle behavior proposed for health protection and development. This study was carried out to evaluate the quality of the sleep and the factors that affecting the sleep of the research assistants in Fırat University Medical Faculty. The population of this cross-sectional study was composed of 246 resident physicians who were trained in Fırat University Hospital and 232 of them were reached (Response rate: 94.3%). A questionnaire including the Pittsburg Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) was applied face to face to the participants. The average age of the research assistants was 29.12 ± 3.30 years, %40.9 of them were female, %53.4 of them were married, %31.9 of them had children and %64.2 of them worked in internal medicine sciences. The average PSQI score of the participants was 8.35 ± 2.90. According to the PSQI cut-off point, the percentage of those who have higher than 5 points, ie poor sleep quality, is %87.9. Those who work in the department of surgical medicine, those are not satisfied/partially satisfied in their department, those who consider the relationship between the faculty members and the research assistants in the same department are considered as bad/moderate, the effect of the professions on their private lives as bad and the ones who cannot devote time to their social life, those who consider their social life to be poor, those who have night duties, who have more than nine night duties per month, those with a poor/moderate general health status, those whose average sleep time 6 hours or less, those with sleep problems, those who have daytime sleepiness, those who do not eat regularly, those who consume 7 cups and more of caffeinated beverages per day, those who did not have a special time for rest and those who are fat/obese had been found to have high rates of poor sleep quality (p <0.05). As a result, the sleep quality of the research assistants was considered to be poor. It was considered that it would be appropriate in terms of solution to improve the quality of sleep conditions.
