The examine attitudes and belief among mental illness in a university hospita

Aim: The aim of this study was to investigate the attitudes and beliefs of internalized stigmatization and the healthy control group towards the psychiatric diagnosed individuals in the psychiatric diagnosed population. Patients who applied to Bülent Ecevit University Hospital Family Medicine and Psychiatry outpatient clinics were included. Method: The research was completed between 01.09.2017 and 01.12.2017 with Internalized stigma of mental illness scale, the Beliefs Toward Mental İllness Scale, Scaling Community Attitudes Toward The Mentally İll, individuals and socio-demographic questionnaire. Findings: 294 participants between the ages of 18 and 65 were included in the study. In general, when the results are evaluated, the scores of the internalized stigma scale increase as the clinical course deteriorates (duration of the disease, rate of treatment, etc.) in individuals with psychiatric diagnoses. When the attitudes and beliefs of the relatives of the patients and the healthy controls were evaluated, it was seen that the attitudes and beliefs of the relatives of the patients were more positive than the healthy controls. Results: It has been found that communication and close contact with individuals who have been diagnosed with mental illness have a positive effect on attitudes and beliefs about mental illnesses.
