Determination of the information and support needs of women with primary relatives with breast cancer

Abstract (EN)

This study was conducted to determine the information and support needs of women with breast cancer in first degree relatives. The research was carried out in the General Surgery Departments at the Balcalı Hospital of Faculty of Medicine of Çukurova University in a descriptive and cross-sectional method between January-June 2017. This study's universe consisted of first-degree relatives of women with breast cancer who were hospitalized in these clinics and 110 patients who voluntarily participated for sampling surveys. "Personal Information Form" and "The Information and Support Needs Questionnaire" were used to collect the data. Data were evaluated with SPSS 20.0 package program and descriptive statistics (number, percentage, mean and standard deviation) were made during analsis. It was found that the information needs of the women who constituted the sample of the study had higher mean scores (3,68 ± 0,36) than their support needs (3,24 ± 0,58). At the same time, it was found that the level of satisfaction of the information needs of women was also higher (2.28 ± 0.35) than the support level average (1.93 ± 0.34). As a result of, it has been determined that women's information needs are more important than their support needs and their level of meeting their information needs is higher than the level of meeting their support needs.
