Abstract (EN)
Both İzmir and its periphery have fertile lands. When its fertile lands combined with its port, it made it an important nutriment center. Food brought from the inner regions by caravans was sent from the port and the things that İzmir and its periphery did not own were brought to the port by ships and from there they were moved to the inner regions by caravans. Along with the developments in the 19th century, especially the development of the railway network facilitated its transportation with İzmir's hinterland. In this way, she continued to feed both herself and other geographies, as before, but with more modern tools. This situation changed with the start of the First World War, which affects the whole world, but especially the Ottoman State, which was unprepared. The aim of the thesis has been to seek answers to the change in Izmir during the First World War and the nutritional problem that occurred, by addressing its history of nutrition, and by addressing its state during the war period. Although there are diffrent studies on World War I and Izmir, it is also constitutes the importance of this thesis to try to eliminate the deficiency of a compiler study that looks at Izmir in the First World War from this perspective. Throughout the study, archival documents, periodicals, and memoirs have been used as primary sources. Also have been used citing the works written too about that period. It was concluded that Izmir cannot directly be considered as a warzone, but it still had problems with food though it was affected less compared to the other zones. Key Words: First World War, Izmir, Ottoman Empire, war, nutrition, malnutrition
