The aspects of first grade teachers to the phonetic based sentence method when teaching to read and write(sample of Bursa)

Teaching to read and write constructs the fundamentals of a life-long learning for the people to acquire the knowledge-which is necessory. For this reason, reading is the first step of a life-long learning. The permanancy of the knowledge, which is given when teaching to read and write, depends on the quality of the studies in that period. Even though analysis method for teaching to read was used for a long time, in the phonetic based sentence method in Turkey. In this sense, the aspects of the first grade teachers to the phonetic based sentence method has become more important. In this research study it is aimed to identify the aspects of the first grade teachers to the phonetic based sentence method. This research is based on a survey test. The study is conducted in 12 primary schools in Bursa province which are bound to Ministry of Education. 20 teachers were interviewed in this study. The data of this study is collected by a semi-structured interview, which is one of the qualitative research methods, in order to get the aspects of the the teachers clearly. Descriptive analysis technique is used in the analysis of the data and the data is further discussed in numbers. The results indicate that the students of the phonetic based sentence method have slower reading speed and less reading comprehension. But, the phonetic based sentence method is found more suitable for the individual differences, caused efficient reading and writing skills, effected early reading, prevented the pupils from memorizing. On the teachers face with some problems when applying the phonetic based sentence method in teaching to read. The problems related to the phonetic based sentence method include being pioneer as a method in Turkey, insufficent in-job education, the difference of the methods at home and school. Further more insufficent materials, crowded classes, difficulty of the course and workbooks, slower reading skills and less reading comprehension related problems can be mentioned with the result of the data in this research.
