Preparati̇on A herbal drog monograph: Lavandula stoechas L.

Lavandula ssp., is an important genus belonging to Lamiaceae family, which contains essential oil plants that have a great economic and medical importance. There are 39 species of this genus almost all of Mediterranean origin. Two species of Lavandula -Lavandula stoechas subsp. stoechas (karabaş) and L. pedunculata subsp. cariensis (Karan) naturally grow in Turkey. These two species, known as Karabaş otu, Gargan Keşişotu Karan çiçeği, Lavanta çiçeği, Karahan are generally used for centuries in folk medicine for medical purposes interchangeably. Their prepared infusion (2-5%) and hydrodistilled essential oil are widely used for their analgesic, antiseptic, wound healing, sedative, expectorant activities and anti-inflammatory for urinary tract, in egzama, and also have nerve and heart enhancer properties. In the present work, according to quality parameters required for a herbal drug monograph in the European Pharmacopoeia, a herbal drug monograph was prepared by examining the samples of different plant samples collected from different regions of the Turkey. The main compound of these species was reported to be camphor and restricted by food authorities because of its chronic and acute toxicity. Therefore, qualitative and quantitative amount of camphor was determined in both volatile oils and also in prepared infusions.
