General features, opinions, behaviours and level of knowledge of candidate biology teachers about the subjects of the environmental health, hygiene and first aid have been determined

In this study; general features, opinions, behaviours and level of knowledgeof candidate biology teachers about the subjects of the environmental health,hygiene and first aid have been determined.In the investigation, success test and questionnarie have been applied to allthe students studying in Gazi University, Faculty of Education, Department ofSecondary Education Science and Mathematics Teaching, Biology TeachingProgramme. In questionnarie, questions determining the general features, opinionsand baheviours of the candidate teachers about the subjects; in success test, questionsaimed at evaluating the level of knowledge on the subjects have been prepared.77 % of candidate biology teachers do not know what kind of preventivemeasures are required to be taken before any biological, chemical or nuclear attackand 42,7 % of them do not konw the preventive measures that are required beforeearthquake, torrent, fire and similar disasters. 55 % of the candidates have informedthat they are ignorant about contagious diseases and 80,2 % of them have informedthat the lectures they attend at the university do not make any contribution to theirknowledge of health and first aid. 96,9 % of candidates have stated that they needmore information on first aid and 96,2 % of them on environmental health andpreventive hygiene. Despite almost all of them ( 98,5 % ) see first aid and hygieneare necessary for teachers, 89,3 % of them see themselves insufficent in hearthmassage, 83,2 % in artificial respiration, 76,3 % in haemorrhage and 67,2 % inintervening fractures.In the success test aimed at detemining the level of knowledge of candidatebiology teachers success rate has been proved as only 49 %. An expressivedifference has not found in the levels of knowledge between the candidate biologyteachers who took the lesson of hygiene during their seconrady education and thosewho did not, it has been seen that the level of knowledge of those who took a courseon first aid is higher than in comparison with those who did not. There is noivdifference in knowledge between those who believe that they can changeenvironmental health of the school and its vicinity in a positive way when theybecome teachers and those who do not. The levels of knowledge of the candidateshave been proved to be low whether they see themselves sufficent in avoidingcontagious diseases or not.Key Words: Enviromental Health, Health, First Aid, Gazi University,Biology Teacher, Biology Teaching, Teacher.
