The effect of Vivosorb® and Epifilm® on healing of acute tympanic membrane perforation: An experimental study

Abstract (EN)
Introduction and Objective: Paper, silk patch, gelfoam, micropore strip, alloderm, and watersoluble chitosan tape were the materials that have been previously used for repairing the TM perforations the purpose of our experimental sent study was to evaluate the clinical and histological effects of Epifilm ® and Vivosorb ® on healing of traumatic tympanic membrane perforations in rats. Materials and Methods: The posterioinferior quadrantof the tympanic membranes in both ears of 14 rats was perforated with a 20-g needle. After this procedure, all subjects were divided into two equal groups. In the first group, Vivosorb® was applied on the right perforated tympanic membranes of subjects. In second group, Epifilm® was applied on the perforated right tympanic membranes. The left perforated ears were used as controls. On postoperative 15th day specimens were examined histopathologically with a light microscope Results: In the control and which used Vivosorb group, perforation closure rate was 85.7% (6/7). In the group which used Epifilm ,this rate was 100% (7/7). The mean fibroblastic reaction score of the control group was 1,71 ±0,48 (+) whereas in the Epifilm group was 0,57±0,53 (+).). The mean fibroblastic reaction score of the Vivosorb group was 2,14 ±0,37 (+) . The mean neovascularization score of the control group was 0,57±0,53 (+)). In the Epifilm group this score was 0,14±0,37 (+).The mean neovascularization score of the Vivosorb group was 1,42 ±0,78 (+) Conclusion: In our study, Vivosorb which is used in many surgical procedures improved healing process. Owing to the limited number of studies conducted on this issue, these results must be supported by further investigations.
