Abstract (EN)

This dissertation has Boethius' thoughts on five predicables as its subject and aims to answer the question: 'How did Boethius understand five predicables?' İn order to answer the question, author starts a quest on the origins of five predicables. Basing on ideas of several resarcher's, İsagoge is determined as the source of five predicables and Porphyry as the realiser of a new arrangement of Aristotelian predicables. İn this context, a literature criticism is presented comprising Porphyry. İn the first chapter, universal concepts in Boethian thought are examined in their formation process through abstraction models, then focusing especially on their function in language. Thus, psychological and communicational basis of a cognitional act performed on the axis of five predicables is exposed. İn the second chapter, Boethius' views on genus, species, difference, property and accident qua predicables are entirely described. Finally, author analyses philosopher's main approach to Porphyrian five predicables and comments on their use in relation with all ten categories.
