Silhouette of Bosphorus and photogrammetric method in determining the silhouette

The subject of the study named, ?Silhouette of Bosphorus and Photogrammetric Method in Determining the Silhouette?, is to identify the development of Bosphorus silhouette within factors that form silhouette, furthermore defining photogrammetric method in determining silhouette for the sake of preservation of the silhouette. The aim of the study is to make a research on technical and planning tools to conserve and regenerate cultural values, with analyzing differentiation process in Bosphorus silhouette. The objective of thesis is to define the evaluation process of Bosphorus silhouette and the opportunities that photogrammetry provides to protect these values. In addition to this, the study provides clarification of important subjects in determining silhouette with technics of photogrammetry. Moreover, the boundaries defined by the law compared to the silhouette line was inspected, in order to understand the importance of silhouette line in planning studies. The thesis consists of six chapters: Objectives, content and methodology of thesis are mentioned in the first chapter. The conceptual framework of the study was formed in the second chapter; subjects related to ?silhouette?, ?factors that effect the formation of silhouette?, ?photogrammetry?, ?photogrammetric methods in determining silhouette? were defined in this part. In the third chapter of the study the process which is effective in the differentiation of the silhouette is taken into consideration especially in the Bosphorus, within the natural, socio cultural, spatial factors and factors that conduct the space. Natural factors namely, topography, climate, vegetation were analyzed on these aspects. Population growth, differentiation in socio-cultural structure are analyzed in this content. Spatial factors are analyzed in the context of residential development, economic changes and transportation developments. Effects of planning and legal arrangements to silhouette were taken into consideration in the analysis. In the fourth chapter of the study, possibilities in the conservation of historical places by the help of photogrammetry as a technical instrument that facilitate to reveal the effects of the elements which were shaped the silhouette and important subjects in determining Bosphorus silhouette with photogrammetric methods were mentioned. In addition to this; possibilities in determining differentiation of historical and natural areas that were threatened by urbanization with the help of photogrammetry are mentioned. In the following processes to protect the silhouette involves natural and historical values that reflects the identity of Bosphorus necessities and requirements in planning and legal arrangements are suggested and the Bosphorus region boundaries comes with the laws are compared with the skyline of the Bosphorus and divergences and negative effects of the boundaries to the silhouette are detected. In the conclusion, findings from analysis and suggestions are summarized briefly. In the development of conservation process in Istanbul, important activities occurred in the content of law and planning to protect historical, cultural and natural landscape elements. However, the possibility of the protection of silhouette that reflect these elements are limited especially in Bosphorus. Photogrammetry could be an important technical tool that provides to protect silhouette according to planning and regulations. To protect the cultural landscape in Bosphorus, it is obvious that photogrammetry helps to collect important data with determining silhouette line. Thus, within the aims and objectives these applications provides to conserve the silhouette of Bosphorus and her historical, natural and cultural identity.
