The role of renewable energy in the energy security of the European Union from the perspective of the regional security complex

Energy is an indispensable element of our daily lives. With the increasing population and industrialization, the energy needs of countries have soared over time. Because of the asymmetric distribution of energy resources around the world, some countries have become more dependent on energy imports. The European Union is a community of states experiencing such dependency. Due to limited resources and being heavily dependent on energy imports, the EU faces a challenge in terms of its energy security. For this very reason, it is imperative for the EU to utilize Renewable Energy resources thereby reducing its vulnerabilities caused by its dependence on the foreign energy resources. Studying the European Union through the lenses of energy security shows an association with the Copenhagen School's concept of the Regional Security Complex. Having a shared geography and similar history of security perceptions, the European countries gets more and more unified as their energy objectives are getting more important and intertwined. Thus, this transforms the EU into a regional security complex.
