Mentalizing and cognitive distortions in people with borderline personality disorder

In recent years, many research investigating mentalization in individuals with borderline personality disorder (BPD) has attracted attention in the literature. The present study investigated the relationship between mentalization and cognitive distortions in individuals diagnosed with borderline personality disorder, as well as between mentalization and cognitive distortions in individuals with BPD. The number of participants were fifty-four. There were two groups. There were twenty-seven people who diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder. The other participants were not diagnosed with BPD. Qualification of participations were smiliar with each other. Afterward, scales applied to reach data. Sociodemographic Information Form, Mind Reading Inventory, Mentalization Scale, and Cognitive Distortions Scale was completed by the participants. The Mind Reading and Mentalization Scale from the Eyes was used to measure mentalization in borderline personality disorder. The cognitive Distortions Scale was used to measure cognitive distortions. In this dissertation, cognitive distortions were observed more frequently in individuals with borderline personality disorder than in individuals without borderline personality disorder. In the lighting of analyses, Mentalization level was lower in individuals diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorders in the Spearman's Rho Analysis findings, a negative and moderate (r=0.466; p=0.014) correlation was observed between mentalization and cognitive distortions in individuals with a borderline personality disorder. According to the results of the analysis, it has seen that cognitive distortions decrease as the level of mentalization increases in individuals with a borderline personality disorder. It is thought that this study will be useful in interviews with patients with BPD and will shed light on future studies.
