A phenomenological study of patient-reported outcomes in intestinal ostomies

Purpose: To determine patient outcomes reported by Wound, Ostomy and Continence Nurse, surgeons, individuals with stoma and caregiver in individuals with an intestinal ostomy purposes. Materials and Methods: The research was conducted using a qualitative phenomenology model to examine nurses (n=9) working in 9 Stomatherapy Units in Turkey and individuals with stoma followed in this unit (n=9), caregivers (n=9) and surgeons (n=9) of the individual with stoma. n=9). Written permission from Koç University Social Sciences Ethics Committee and verbal permission from the participants were obtained in order to conduct the research. Interviews were conducted online by the researcher using a semi-structured interview form between 19 June 2020 and 23 June 2021. Descriptive statistics were used for the quantitative data of the research, and content analysis method was used for the qualitative data. Results: The mean working time of nurses as Wound, Ostomy and Continence Nurse were 9.6 ± 5.7 years, and the mean years of surgeons performing colorectal cancer surgery were 14.6 ± 8.7 years. 66.7% of individuals with stoma have temporary ileostomy, and the average life expectancy with stoma is 32.1 (median: 8) months. Only 22.2% of individuals with stoma care for their stoma themselves. 33.4% of caregivers are spouses of the individual with stoma, all of them received training on stoma care and 66.7% of them received their training from WOCN. As a result of the analysis of individualized in-depth interviews, recovery indicators of individuals with stoma; They are grouped under the themes of "Indicators of General Health Status", "Indicators of Living Activities", "Indicators of Social Life and Adaptation Relationships", "Indicators of Psychological Well-being", "Stoma Management" and "Empowering the Individual". Conclusions: The patient outcomes, developed based on the common opinions of all parties receiving and providing care, will contribute to the development of care strategies and algorithms of institutions, and to the creation of relevant guides in the literature, in providing individual-centered care, in planning the training and counseling services to be given starting from the preoperative period of the individual with stoma.
