Examination of the individuals' marriage conflict, conflict communication styles and social support systems in the process of divorce

The goal of the study is to examine the relationship between the level of marriage conflict, conflict communication style, social support and some socio-demographic characteristics.The sample of the study is composed of participants, who made divorce application to the family courts in the city of Izmir and referred to the social workers, psychologists and pedagogues in charge of the family courts. 102 participants who were in the process of divorce were voluntarily involved in the study. The data were collected via the demographic information form, Conflict Communication Scale (Hatipoğlu, 1993), Marital Conflict Questionnaire (Goldstein, 1999) and Multidimensional Social Support Survey (Zimet ve ark., 1988). According to the results, marriage conflict level of women was significantly higher than men and the ?emotional expression? scores of men were higher than women. The divorce reasons of male and female participants were significantly different. According to the findings, the ?Social Support//Family? subscale scores of those living with their families are higher than those living alone.%21 of female participants and %18 of male participants noted that they had consultancy. %23.5 of female participants and % of male participants expressed that they consulted to a close family member %9.8 of participants expressed that they consulted to a family consulter, psychologist or psychiatrist.Keywords: Divorce, marriage conflict, communication conflict, social support.
